Texas Longhorns 7th-best first-round NFL draft pick of the last 25 years: Cedric Benson

Running back
Chicago Bears: 2004-2007
Cincinnati Bengals: 2008-2011
Green Bay Packers: 2012

Cedric Benson had one of the best careers in Texas Longhorns history as he managed to run for over 1,000 yards in every single year in Austin. That included 1,834 yards and 19 touchdowns in his senior season. He was supposed to go onto the NFL and put together a Hall of Fame career.

While Benson didn’t do that, he did have an impressive career. In fact, perhaps it was even more impressive because when he was selected by the Bears he was good, but not great. It wasn’t until he headed to the Cincinnati Bengals in 2008.

When he signed with the Bengals as a kind of an afterthought, he showed the kind of talent he’d shown to Texas Longhorns fans years before. He ran over 1,000 yards in three of his four years with the Bengals but he was still let go after the 2011 season. He had one more go with the Green Bay Packers before he called it a career after a short stay with the NFC North team.
