Texas Longhorns 16th-best first-round NFL draft pick of the last 25 years: Mike Williams

Offensive tackle
Buffalo Bills: 2002-2005, 2009

Mike Williams is one of the many offensive linemen that has gone from the Texas Longhorns to the NFL. His story is a big different than others because he managed to continue his professional career a few years after it looked like it was over.

Williams was drafted fourth overall in the 2002 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills who almost certainly thought they had found someone who would anchor the offensive line for a long time. That’s not really close to how things shaped up.

Williams did start off like gangbusters but had problems staying healthy almost immediately. He started 14 games in his rookie season and proceeded to start 28 of 32 games in the next two seasons. However, while the former Texas Longhorns star wasn’t short on any sort of talent he simply could not stay healthy.

In 2005, the offensive lineman appeared in just nine games and started just six. He then decided it was time to call it quits due to the fact that he had so many bumps and bruises. Williams did try and bounce back later in his career. In 2009, he made one final go with the Buffalo Bills. He appeared and started eight games that season before finally and officially ending his short NFL career.
