Ranking every Texas Longhorns first round draft pick of the last 25 years
Texas Longhorns 15th-best first-round NFL draft pick of the last 25 years: Malcom Brown
Defensive tackle
New England Patriots: 2015-2018
New Orleans Saints: 2019-2020
Jacksonville Jaguars: 2021
Malcom Brown is one of those players that feels like they should have had a better and longer career than he did. The former Texas Longhorns star declared for the NFL Draft after his third season with the Big 12 team. It certainly looked like he was headed for a pretty interesting career when he was selected by the New England Patriots’ 32nd overall in the 2015 draft.
The main problem is that he simply didn’t have the kind of impact on the defensive line that the Patriots had hoped he would. That’s why, after starting most of his team’s games over his first four seasons in the league, the Pats declined his fifth-year option, and he was allowed to depart as. a free agent.
In 2019, he signed with the New Orleans Saints and spent the next two years with that squad. His numbers with the Saints continued to trend in the wrong direction. Eventually, he was traded by the Saints to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but after one season with the Jags, he was released, and it appears that his NFL career is over now. Perhaps the most interesting part of Brown’s story is that he’s the last Texas Longhorns first-round pick. That it’s been so many years since Texas has had one is indeed strange.
