Texas Longhorns 13th-best first-round NFL draft pick of the last 25 years: Vince Young

Quarterback
Tennessee Titans: 2006-2010
Philadelphia Eagles: 2011

Few Texas Longhorns players were celebrated as much when they played in Austin that had as short a career in the NFL as Vince Young. Of course, one has to wonder if things might have been different if he’d come along about a decade later. When Young, who threw for 6,000 yards and ran for 3,000 in his college career, entered the pros, it feels like the NFL still didn’t know what to do with quarterbacks with his skill set.

That’s despite Tennessee Titans clearly thinking those talents could be put to good use. He was taken by them as the third overall selection in the 2006 draft, but soon petered out after struggling to offer much of an offensive attack through the air.

Young was handed the starting job in his rookie season but had problems keeping the ball out of opposing hands. He threw 12 TDs but 13 INTs while rushing for a somewhat disappointing 552 yards and seven touchdowns. In his sophomore season, things were even worse as he had nine TD throws to 17 INTs.

Right up until 2010, the Titans gave Young all the chances they could afford. However, they did eventually cut bait. In 2011 he moved to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he started just three games before his career ended.
