Among the earliest portal departures for the Longhorns that technically still fit in the 2023 transfer class is the former blue-chip recruit and redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Jaylen Garth. The 6-foot-5 and 305-pound Garth put his name in the transfer portal last fall after spending two years at Texas.

During his two seasons on the 40, Garth took 21 offensive snaps at the offensive tackle position over the course of two games. Both of the games Garth appeared in for the Burnt Orange came during the 2021 season, against the Rice Owls at home in Week 3 and against the Texas Tech Red Raiders on the road in Week 4.

After offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood and the Longhorns signed an elite group of recruits along the offensive line in the 2022 class, the writing was on the wall for players further down the depth chart such as Garth as to what the future at Texas could hold. Thus, Garth elected to enter the portal before the start of fall camp last year.

Garth found a home with head coach Dana Holgorsen and the Houston Cougars. Houston is close to home for the Port Neches, TX, native Garth. And he should have an opportunity to compete for more playing time this fall with some of the key departures the Cougars had along the offensive line this offseason.

Most notably, Houston lost starting right tackle Lance Robinson to the portal this spring, opening up an opportunity for Garth to push for starting reps at the position heading into the fall.

Houston will be a Big 12 foe of the Longhorns for the first time during the 2023 season. Texas is set to face Houston
