Texas Football: 3 Horns that transferred to rival schools this offseason
Brenen Thompson, WR
For the first time in the transfer portal’s existence (going back roughly a half-decade), a Texas transfer decided to take his talents north of the Red River this offseason to join the Oklahoma Sooners. Former four-star recruit and track star Brenen Thompson transferred to Oklahoma this spring after putting his name in the portal a couple of weeks ago.
While this wasn’t a completely shocking decision, it is rare to see a player (especially with the talent level and speed of a wideout like Thompson) transfer from one hated rival to another.
Thompson was probably the biggest portal departure for Sark and the Longhorns this spring. After competing in track and field at Texas this spring instead of participating in spring football, Thompson likely lost ground on the wide receiver depth chart as new additions to the program such as AD Mitchell and Johntay Cook II stepped up in practice.
It looked like Thompson would have a tough challenge in front of him to win a spot on the two-deep wide receiver depth chart heading into the fall. Thus, he decided to take his talents elsewhere this offseason.
Thompson will look to compete with LV Bunkley-Shelton and Gavin Freeman, among a few other wideouts, for a spot on the two-deep at OU this fall.
I’m sure it will cause a stir to see Thompson suiting up for the Sooners this fall, especially during the week of the Red River Rivalry game. But the fact of the matter is that this probably won’t be the only time we see a player transfer from Texas to Oklahoma, or vice versa.
