At the moment, the portal recruitment that Texas looks to be prioritizing the most is the former UTEP Miners junior 6-foot-8 and 235-pound power forward Ze’Rik Onyema. The physically dominant forward will reportedly take a visit to Texas starting on May 1, per a tweet from The Portal Report on April 29.

Onyema also made a multi-day visit to Nashville, TN, earlier this week to see the Vanderbilt Commodores. His visit to Vanderbilt was from April 24-27.

It sounds like Onyema had a successful trip to Vanderbilt a few days ago. This portal recruitment is shaping up to be a battle between Texas and Vanderbilt, with the Texas Tech Red Raiders and Ole Miss Rebels still trying to play catch up.

Terry and the Longhorns are recruiting Onyema to be the third big in the rotation behind Disu and Shedrick. He could be a multi-year contributor that could be a dominant force down low to help Texas hit the glass hard and provide some gritty one-on-one paint defense.

The difference in this portal recruitment could ultimately come down to how hard Terry and the Longhorns push with Onyema. It could also be a factor of how much playing time Vanderbilt is promising Onyema right away compared to Texas, who is looking to probably give him a reserve role out of the gates.
