Texas football cracks top 5 for No. 1 2025 TE Davon Mitchell
The spring evaluation period brings about a busy time for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program on the recruiting trail following the conclusion of spring ball earlier this month. Texas is looking to continue to fill out its figurative big board for the 2024 and 2025 recruiting cycles this spring.
As Sark and the Longhorns staff continue to hit the road and evaluate its top targets on the recruiting trail for the next few classes, there was some good news delivered to the coaches via social media this weekend.
The nation’s No. 1 rated tight end recruit in the 2025 class, the elite five-star Los Alamitos (CA) product Davon Mitchell, included Texas among his five finalist schools that he announced on social media on the evening of April 28.
The other four schools that made Mitchell’s top five are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oklahoma Sooners, Texas A&M Aggies, and Miami Hurricanes.

It sounds like relationships and scheme fit are two of the biggest factors that contributed to these five schools making it through this round of finalist cuts for Mitchell (per On3).
"“The reason that these 5 schools were chosen is because they are the ones who talk to me the most and the schools that I could see myself going to. Those schools also have a great way of using their tight ends and I also have a good relationship with those coaches.”"
Texas has made a big move with the elite 2025 tight end recruit in the last few months. Despite him moving from Allen in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex to California recently, Texas and special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks have maintained consistent communication and a good relationship with Mitchell and his camp.
Mitchell also had a successful unofficial trip to Austin for the second Junior Day of the offseason on March 25. That was Mitchell’s second unofficial visit to the 40 since last fall.
But Banks and the Longhorns have a real dogfight on their hands to take the pole position in this recruitment. Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby has one of the best relationships of any position coach/coordinator that is recruiting Mitchell. And it looks like Mitchell can see himself in Norman, producing at a high level in that Sooner offense.
There is still a long way to go in this recruitment, but we’re starting to see the picture of Mitchell’s top group of schools take shape as he prepares for his junior season of high school football (which will also be his first at Los Alamitos in California). Banks and the Longhorns must continue to keep their foot on the gas to show Mitchell how much of a priority he is for them in the 2025 class.
Mitchell is a top priority at the tight end position for Banks and the Longhorns in the 2025 class. If Texas continues to make big moves in this recruitment, this could come down to a battle between Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma in the race to land a commitment from Mitchell. Granted, Texas and Texas A&M still have some ground to make up to catch the Sooners.
