One of the biggest names to emerge in the NCAA Transfer Portal just prior to the closing of the spring entry window (April 30) is former Texas football and Nebraska Cornhuskers redshirt senior quarterback Casey Thompson. The fifth-year senior quarterback entered the transfer portal for the second time in as many offseasons this weekend.

Thompson immediately becomes one of the most intriguing transfer options at the quarterback position among those in the portal that has proven live-game experience. He started 20 games over the last two seasons at Texas and Nebraska and played in more than two dozen in total.

Over the course of his four-year collegiate career thus far, Thompson has registered more than 4,800 passing yards, 47 passing touchdowns, 19 interceptions, nearly 200 rushing yards, and 10 rushing scores.

Thompson entered the transfer portal following the conclusion of spring ball at Nebraska. He likely entered the portal to get a starting job elsewhere after he fell behind in the QB competition with former Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims.

Possible portal landing spots for former Texas football and Nebraska QB Casey Thompson

There aren’t many quarterbacks available in the portal as of the writing of this article on the evening of April 30 that have as much proven starting experience as Thompson. With that in mind, here’s a look at three possible transfer destinations for Thompson this spring.

Auburn

The early favorite in the portal recruitment for Thompson this spring is clearly the Auburn Tigers and new head coach Hugh Freeze. In fact, multiple reports (including one from 247Sports) have already confirmed that Thompson is currently in the midst of a visit to Auburn this weekend.

Auburn also appears to be considering Michigan State quarterback transfer Payton Thorne. But I would peg Thompson as the top priority for the Tigers among quarterback transfers at the moment.

Thompson could be the favorite to win the quarterback competition over the likes of junior TJ Finley and sophomore Robby Ashford for Auburn heading into the fall if he does land with the Tigers out of the portal this spring.

Florida

If I could pick a school to be a distant second among the top potential destinations for Thompson this spring, it would be the Florida Gators. Head coach Billy Napier and the Gators are still trying to find their answer at the quarterback position ahead of the fall.

Wisconsin transfer Graham Mertz and Ohio State transfer Jack Miller III are two of the top quarterbacks in the battle for the QB1 job in Gainesville heading into the fall as it stands now.

Cal

The last spot on this list is reserved for a potential dark horse that could emerge as a potential destination for Thompson out of the portal this spring. The Cal Golden Bears in the PAC-12 North could be an intriguing option for Thompson, as a spot where he could likely start right away.

TCU transfer Sam Jackson V currently looks like the favorite to be Cal’s starting quarterback this fall, but he lacks meaningful live-game experience with only six career passing attempts under his belt. Thompson could be an immediate favorite to be Cal’s starter in the near term were he to consider this as a potential destination.
