Former Texas football S B.J. Foster invited to Chiefs rookie minicamp
Another former Texas football player that went undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft last weekend was given a shot to make a roster early this week. Former Texas and Sam Houston State senior safety B.J. Foster reportedly received an invite to the Kansas City Chiefs rookie minicamp.
Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston tweeted the report that the Chiefs invited Foster to its rookie minicamp on May 1.
Foster will get a chance to join two of his former Texas teammates, defensive lineman Keondre Coburn and defensive end Charles Omenihu, with the Chiefs heading into the 2023 season. The Chiefs picked up Coburn in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Moreover, Foster will be looking to capitalize on his immense talent and a solid super-senior season at Sam Houston State by earning a spot on the Chiefs’ roster this offseason.

The 6-foot-2 and 205-pound Foster is a former elite five-star recruit out of Angleton (TX) High School that signed with the Longhorns in the 2018 class. Foster is a big and physical safety that has a lot of sideline-to-sideline speed and brings a lot of pop in the pads.
Foster was thrown into the fire right away at Texas, starting in a half-dozen games and playing in all 13 for the Longhorns as a true freshman in 2018. He registered 46 combined tackles, nine tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, five pass breakups, and two forced fumbles during a productive true freshman campaign at Texas. Foster was one of the five highest-graded freshman defensive backs in the Big 12 during the 2018 season.
Over the next few years, though, Foster dealt with some injury issues and regression on the field that limited his potential in the Texas defense. He would never grade out as high as he did at Texas in 2018 throughout the rest of his career on the 40. And Foster only played double-digit games once out of three seasons to round out his career at Texas from 2019-2021.
Despite that, Foster still wrapped up his four years on the Forty Acres as one of the more productive safeties in the last half-decade. He registered more than 160 career combined tackles at Texas, 17.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, five interceptions, 11 pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.
According to Sports Reference, only two Texas safeties have more career combined tackles since 2015 than Foster (Brandon Jones and Caden Sterns).
After the 2021 season, Foster transferred to FCS Sam Houston State for the final year of his collegiate eligibility. He was an All-WAC First-Team safety at Sam Houston State last season as he racked up nearly 30 combined tackles, three tackles for loss, three QB pressures, one sack, one pass breakup, and one interception.
Foster is now one of two former Longhorns players that were invited to rookie minicamps after going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft. The other is the former Texas and Iowa State Cyclones redshirt senior wide receiver, who got a rookie minicamp invite from the New York Giants.
