Texas Baseball: 5 best Longhorns of all-time in the MLB
5. Greg Swindell
Career: 1986-2002, 1 ASG, 30.5 WAR, 1 WS (4.05 points)
We start off the top five on this list with someone that is still very much involved around Longhorn baseball, the former Baseball America Freshman of the Year Greg Swindell. The three-time Golden Spikes Award finalist can be seen calling Texas baseball games on the Longhorn Network.
Swindell is one of the best pitchers in program history, posting a career record at Texas of 43-8 with a sparkling 1.92 earned run average. For his spectacular efforts at Texas, Swindell was the Baseball America Player of the Year in 1985 and a three-time First-Team All-American.
In the pros, Swindell continued his dominance on the mound. He was the second overall pick of the Cleveland Indians in the 1986 MLB Amateur Draft. And he made his MLB debut soon after the 1986 draft.
Swindell did take a couple of seasons to get his feet wet with Cleveland. But started to show some dominance on the mound during the 1989 season, earning his first and only All-Star selection in his MLB career.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Swindell was one of the better closers in the American League for Cleveland. He registered more than 150 saves during his seven years closing out games for them.
After his time with Cleveland came to an end in 1991, Swindell spent a few seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and Houston Astros until 1996. He was still one of the more effective closers in baseball, posting more than 100 saves from 1991-1995.
Swindell continued his journey around the MLB with four other teams in the 1990s and early 2000s, including when he was his only career World Series ring with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001.
