Before too long, we’ll be moving into the summer months, which brings about a critical time for Texas football recruiting (especially in the 2024 class). Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian have played a really patient game up to this point on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class.

Sark and the Longhorns staff are waiting for a major wave of momentum to build on the recruiting trail during the summer and fall. And while I do believe this is the right move to make in this day and age of college football recruiting, it does come with some risks.

At the moment, Texas holds commitments from just two recruits in the 2024 class. That is because Sark and the Longhorns staff are banking on these relationship-building efforts and evaluations for more than a dozen priority recruits in the 2024 class that are planning to commit during the summer and fall to lead to this major wave of momentum starting in June and July.

June will bring about the all-important summer official visit season, which is one of the most critical points on the offseason recruiting calendar for the Longhorns.

With that in mind, here’s a look at three priority in-state recruits the Longhorns must win over this summer.

Freddie Dubose Jr., WR

The 2024 wide receiver class in the state of Texas is pretty loaded. Highlighted by the elite five-star Temple Lake Belton wide receiver Micah Hudson, four-star Midlothian product Bryant Wesco, and four-star Schertz Smithson Valley product Freddie Dubose Jr., Texas has more than a half-dozen targets at the position in the 2024 class that all stand out.

Dubose is one of the more interesting recruits in this class, though, given that he’s had a scheduled commitment date for a good while now. Dubose is set to announce on Aug. 25, 2023, right before the start of his senior season at Smithson Valley.

Texas has started to prioritize Dubose as one of the top in-state wideouts in the 2024 class. I think Dubose is a firm take for the Longhorns staff if they can make a big move with the rehabbing Schertz, TX, native. That was made clear after he felt the love from the Texas coaches during his last trip to campus, which was during the second Junior Day of the offseason on March 25.

The Texas A&M Aggies and Baylor Bears are both charging hard in this recruitment. For Texas to win this recruitment, Sark and new wide receivers coach Chris Jackson will have to sell him on fit and development. Texas can make a big move in the race to land a commitment from Dubose when he makes the official trip to Austin in June.

For the time being, though, Texas sits in a great spot with Dubose a few months ahead of his decision date.
