May 4 was a huge day recruiting in the NCAA Transfer Portal for newly-hired full-time head coach Rodney Terry and the Texas basketball program. Terry and Texas landed a couple of portal commitments from priority transfer targets within the span of fewer than 30 minutes of each other.

The two portal commitments that Terry and the Longhorns staff secured on May 4 were the former UTEP Miners junior power forward Ze’Rik Onyema and UT-Arlington Mavericks freshman guard Chendall Weaver. Landing the 6-foot-8 and 220-pound Onyema helps the Longhorns round out the depth in the frontcourt unit while adding a high-upside player with a couple of years of eligibility remaining.

Meanwhile, Weaver gives the Longhorns a lethal sharpshooter from multiple levels of the floor in the offensive halfcourt. Weaver clearly has a lot of potential to develop his game too after he took home the WAC Freshman of the Year honors last season.

After landing portal commitments from Weaver and Onyema, Texas is now up to eight scholarship players on the roster ahead of the 2023-24 season. I’d imagine that Terry and his staff will be looking to add one or two more scholarship players to the roster ahead of next season.

Where does Texas basketball look next to add to the roster via the portal?

With that in mind, here’s a look at a prediction of who could be the next portal addition for the Longhorns after landing Onyema and Weaver on May 4.

Daimion Collins, C

Zoning in on the next portal priority for Terry and the Longhorns this offseason could take some time. What’s become clear after Texas landed a pair of portal commitments from Weaver and Onyema this week is that the Longhorns staff is going to be very patient with their transfer scouting.

The most information we have at the moment is some of the previous contacts Texas made with portal targets, one of which was the former Kentucky Wildcats sophomore big man Daimion Collins. Texas did “engage” in some initial conversations a couple of weeks ago with Collins when his name surfaced in the portal in late April.

But I don’t think that much has come from those initial conversations in the last 10 days or so between Texas and Collins.

I believe that Collins would re-emerge on the Longhorns’ radar if Texas winds up having a spot open for a scholarship player in the frontcourt unit. Otherwise, Texas is probably going to stick to other rotational and positional needs at this point of the offseason such as wing and guard.
