Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian has the potential to put something really special together during the 2023 season. Texas has a roster chalked full of talent and depth on both sides of the ball with a ton of returning production in the mix.

Especially on the offensive side of the ball, Sark and the Longhorns should have one of the most electric groups in the nation at the skill positions. Texas ranked third in the country in terms of returning offensive production ahead of the 2023 season by ESPN back in February.

The offensive line returns all five starters, giving redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers a wall to give him time to stay composed in the pocket and pick apart opposing defenses with the many skill weapons at his disposal.

And on the defensive side of the ball, Texas has a strong top group along the defensive line along with one of the best and most talented secondaries in the Big 12, if not the entire country.

It’s clear that the Longhorns have the group to finally get it done in the Big 12 to challenge for a conference title in 2023.

This is something that the former Ohio State Buckeyes and Florida Gators three-time National Championship head coach Urban Meyer took notice of on a recent episode of “Urban’s Take with Tim May”. Despite the regular negative connotations that Meyer has when he speaks on Texas, it seems like he’s really high on what the Longhorns can do in 2023.

Urban Meyer speaks highly of the talent on the roster for Texas football in 2023

He mentioned on this YouTube show on May 4 that we shouldn’t “sleep on Texas this year”.

"“I was talking to Mark Pantoni and I was talking to the recruiting director at Ohio State. Man for man, roster against roster, it’s hard to say Texas doesn’t have the best roster in college football.“Now, they’ve got to play. It’s been a while since Texas has been good or elite.”"

He pointed out Ewers as an x-factor for the Longhorns this season. It sounds like he believes if Ewers has a good run for the Longhorns during the 2023 season, that this team could be one of the best in college football. He specifically stated, “I think Georgia, Ohio State, and Texas are in pretty good shape.”

This is some pretty impressive buy-in, especially considering the aforementioned point I made that Meyer usually doesn’t speak all that highly of the Longhorns. Meyer has found plenty of success at multiple stops during his college football coaching career, so he knows what he’s talking about in terms of finding talent on a roster.

The hype train around Texas is clearly building in a big way ahead of next season. I will say, though, that Texas needs to block out some of this noise and focus on getting right heading into summer workouts and fall camp ahead of a critical final season in the Big 12 in 2023.
