Early in the month of May, Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian are now firmly in the midst of the spring evaluation period. Texas has sent out quite a few offers this spring during the evaluation period to rising targets on the recruiting trail in the 2024, 2025, and 2026 classes.

Some of the most intriguing offers that Sark and the Longhorns staff have sent out this spring are to rising targets in the 2024 recruiting class. In the last couple of months, the Longhorns have offered more than a half-dozen blue-chip recruits in the 2024 class.

As of the writing of this article on the afternoon of May 7, Texas has now offered more than 165 recruits in the 2024 class. Sark and the Longhorns staff are offering more prospects in the last two cycles than they did in 2022, which means there are more emerging recruits to sort through this spring.

Texas is getting its foot in the door in some of these rising 2024 recruits at the right time. And some of these recruits that Texas has recently evaluated and offered will see the staff have some ground to make up heading into the summer.

With all of this in mind, here’s a look at an assessment of three of the most intriguing new 2024 offers for the Longhorns during the spring evaluation period.

DD Holmes, EDGE

Edge rusher and defensive line will continue to be two positions to focus on for the Longhorns in the 2024 class. Texas did address the EDGE position in the 2023 class, landing quite a few blue-chip commits to fill that spot well into the future.

But Texas could still use more impact edge rushers as the pass rush needs to improve in the next couple of years as Pete Kwiatkowski and the Longhorns make the transition from the Big 12 to the SEC in 2024. That’s why it’s so big for Texas to hit on some of these spring evaluations at the EDGE position in the 2024 class such as the rising four-star Washington D.C. Gonzaga edge rusher DD Holmes.

The 6-foot-6 and 240-pound Holmes has a ton of upside as a lengthy and athletic EDGE prospect. His physical tools have caught the eye of almost every single major Power Five school around the country in the last few months, including Texas. That led to an offer from the Longhorns on April 25, 2023.

Holmes is a two-sport athlete that plays football and basketball at Gonzaga High School. He has excellent quickness and a lofty wingspan. Where Holmes needs to get down to work in the next year or so is in the weight room. He’s still a pretty lanky athlete that needs to add a good amount of muscle mass to fill out his large 6-foot-6 frame.

A report from 247Sports on May 2 (paid content) saw Holmes include Texas among the more than half-dozen schools that he mentioned that have recently offered that have stood out to him lately. He also noted the Georgia Bulldogs, Oregon Ducks, and USC Trojans, among a few others that have offered recently that he’s got interest in.

At the moment, it looks like the Penn State Nittany Lions and Florida State Seminoles are two of the top schools in this recruitment. Texas will need to get Holmes to campus during the summer to start making up ground with some of the schools in his top group ahead of the fall.
