A really impressive skill player to watch during the spring game for the Longhorns was the former Georgia Bulldogs sophomore wide receiver transfer, AD Mitchell. The reigning two-time National Champion put on a show for the Texas faithful during the spring game, including a really nice one-handed catch in the end zone on a pass that was high from redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Mitchell’s performance this spring quickly cemented him as one of the first-team wide receivers alongside junior field receiver Xavier Worthy and redshirt senior slot receiver Jordan Whittington. The assumption is that Mitchell will be the starting boundary receiver heading into fall camp.

Granted, I would imagine that we’re going to see a good number of four wide receiver sets from Sark this fall if redshirt junior wide receiver Isaiah Neyor makes a full recovery from the knee injury he suffered last fall camp.

It’s clear that Texas is going to have something special in the connection between Ewers and Mitchell in the passing game this fall. Ewers has always thrived when targeting bigger receivers in the passing game (i.e. the chemistry he found with JT Sanders and Neyor last year). And the fact that he now has the 6-foot-4 Mitchell in the mix is really exciting in terms of what it means for the passing game this coming season.

"“He’s just one of those guys that are freaky athletic and a guy that you want in your receiving corps. He has made plays in big games. I think he’s caught a touchdown in every College Football Playoff game that he’s been in.”"

Mitchell gives the Longhorns another dynamic weapon that will be able to thrash opposing defenses in the Big 12 this fall. And it sounds like he’s settled in very nicely with this wide receiver room during the spring.

Texas has one of the best wide receiver rooms in the nation in 2023 largely thanks to the depth it has on the boundary between guys like Mitchell and Neyor. The very fact that redshirt sophomore Casey Cain is the third boundary receiver on the depth chart following the conclusion of spring ball tells you all you need to know about the strength of this group and the WR room as a whole.
