There were quite a few bumps and bruises that Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian dealt with during the last couple of weeks of spring camp. Texas saw more than a half-dozen scholarship players miss the spring game due to injury issues. Some of these injury issues that Texas dealt with this spring were pre-existing from the months preceding camp this offseason. There were also some players for Texas that were banged up during spring camp.

Thankfully, though, potentially none of the injuries that the Longhorns dealt with during spring ball look to be long-term. Texas could actually have each of the injured players back up to full speed in drills by the time fall camp begins in a few months.

Sark provided an update on the injury status of some of the players that missed the Orange-White spring football game at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on April 15. He provided this update during an event in San Antonio hosted by that chapter of the Texas Exes.

Texas football players set to return from injury for summer workouts

Here’s a look at four key injured players for the Longhorns that should be back for the start of summer workouts next month.

Derion Gullette, EDGE/OLB

Among the early enrollees on the defensive side of the ball for the Longhorns this offseason, one of the players with the highest upside is the former highly touted four-star recruit and freshman outside linebacker Derion Gullette. Since Gullette was still recovering from a knee injury he suffered prior to his senior season of high school football at Teague (TX), he wasn’t expected to be a full participant in spring ball.

Thus, Gullette was not able to suit up for the Burnt Orange during the spring game a few weeks ago either.

Gullette did get to at least participate in limited versions of individual drills at the linebacker position during spring camp. He also got to go through the rehab program at the Texas facilities, which should help to expedite the process while making sure he gets the best care.

The next step for Gullette will be to get into the swing of things as a full participant in summer workouts. I’d imagine that Gullette will be working out more with the team as a full participant in the summer strength and conditioning program, judging off what Sark said in San Antonio this week.
