Texas football redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers will have a lot riding on his play for this squad during the 2023 season. More pressure will be on Ewers’ shoulders this fall to lead the offense, especially upon the departures of junior All-American running back Bijan Robinson and the versatile senior Roschon Johnson.

Ewers did get off on the right foot this offseason, though, showing a lot more leadership and maturity in winter workouts and spring camp. He was a leader of one of the workout groups during the winter strength and conditioning program for the first time this offseason.

And Ewers was the steadiest of the bunch, showing the level head we’ve heard about his demeanor so often since last fall along with more consistency on the practice field.

The buzz surrounding Ewers game coming out of spring camp is felt across the college football media landscape. In fact, CBS Sports recognized so much of the improvement that Ewers put on display this spring that they included him among the three best quarterbacks in college football ahead of the 2023 season.

Texas football QB Quinn Ewers ranked among the best at his position by CBS Sports

There are some big names among returning quarterbacks around the college football landscape this year that Ewers rose above in this edition of CBS Sports’ QB power rankings for 2023. He moved past the likes of Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Notre Dame transfer Sam Hartman, and Oregon dual-threat quarterback Bo Nix to crack the top three in this power ranking.

The only two quarterbacks that ranked higher than Ewers on this list were North Carolina’s Drake Maye (No. 2) and USC’s Caleb Williams (No. 1).

It sounds like growth is the biggest reason for Ewers’ rise in this edition of CBS Sports’ QB power rankings.

"I love Ewers, and did you see he got a haircut? For some, that’s probably a knock, but for me, it shows he’s maturing. Who was the last QB to win a title with a mullet? Exactly. This is the kind of growth you want to see."

This piece from CBS also mentioned that Ewers was announced “as the starter following spring practice, besting Arch Manning and Maalik Murphy”. I will say that I disagree with this point. This never felt like it was a quarterback battle, as the quarterback competition was last offseason.

Ewers was the starting quarterback heading into spring ball, and he did nothing to make us think otherwise in the last couple of months.

All in all, it is way too early to project Ewers as one of the three best quarterbacks in college football heading into the 2023 season. It is nice to see the recognition on the national stage for Ewers, but the production on the field must match the talent level and the hype coming out of spring ball for me to come even close to titling him one of the three best players at the position in the nation in 2023.
