Jaydon Blue, RB

This was a really important spring camp for the former highly touted blue-chip Klein Cain recruit and sophomore running back Jaydon Blue. In order to keep pace with all the talent and depth in this running back room during the spring, Blue had a lot to prove to show that he deserves to stay in the top rotation out of the backfield heading into the fall.

I think Blue did that, and potentially even a little bit more in the latter weeks of spring practice.

Blue proved this spring that he has improved his field vision, progressed as a receiver out of the backfield, and showed more overall confidence and maturity on the practice field. He started to break more long runs in team drills, and he showed more consistency in individual drills with RB coach Tashard Choice.

Eric Nahlin of Inside Texas reported last month (paid content) that Blue has “matured quite a bit” in the spring.

Nahlin also mentioned in this report that Blue’s improvement during the spring “put him in much better position to showcase” his talent on the field this fall. That is a testament to just how much Blue was able to impress the coaches in the last couple of months.

If not for Blue showing a high rate of improvement during spring ball, he probably wouldn’t be in a position to compete with the likes of true freshman running back CJ Baxter Jr., redshirt senior Keilan Robinson, and redshirt sophomore Jonathon Brooks for live-game reps this fall.
