Texas Basketball: Grading each Horns portal addition so far this offseason
Max Abmas, G
The headlining portal addition of the offseason so far for Terry and the Longhorns is the former Oral Roberts fourth-year floor general Abmas. The two-time Summit League Player of the Year and three-time AP honorable mention All-American was an absolute stud during his four seasons at Oral Roberts.
What the Longhorns are getting in Abmas is an experienced and proven scorer that is one of the most effective and efficient floor generals in the entire country that operates at a high volume on the offensive end of the floor. It’s rare that you can find a true point guard that can shoot nearly 40 percent from deep consistently while taking just shy of 10 three-point attempts per game.
That’s not to mention the fact that Abmas posted an assist-to-turnover ratio of around 2.0 in the last couple of seasons at Oral Roberts.
There is no doubt in my mind that the addition of Abmas takes Texas over the top in terms of a top-25 caliber team looking ahead early on to the 2023-24 season. Abmas is an All-American-caliber guard that will help to sustain an efficient offensive attack for the Longhorns next season.
I also love the mindset that Abmas is taking into next season with the potential of him having to play off-ball at times on the offensive end.
"“The last few years I’ve been really ball dominant, always having the ball in my hands, but to be able to switch it up, play on and off the ball, will be definitely big for my game.”"
The only real drawback that I see to the Longhorns adding Abmas out of the portal this offseason is his impact on the defensive end of the floor. Abmas was never a plus defender during his time at Oral Roberts. Thus, I think the goal for Abmas on defense this season at Texas will be to be a net-neutral impact player on that end.
Abmas was one of the best transfers on the market this offseason. He plugs a need for Texas immediately at the one upon the departure of senior guard Marcus Carr. And in many ways, I think that the addition of Abmas will be an upgrade for the Longhorns, especially in transition and on offense.
