Texas Basketball: 3 portal guards the Longhorns are pursuing in late May
Caleb Love, G
A couple of times now this offseason, we’ve heard about Terry and the Longhorns being interested in the former North Carolina Tar Heels junior guard Caleb Love. The former elite five-star recruit out of Christian Brothers High School in St. Louis, MO, became available in the portal once again this spring after de-committing from the Michigan Wolverines this week.
Eric Bossi of 247Sports reported on May 17 that Love was “no longer transferring to Michigan” after he ran into an admissions issue with the university. This report was later confirmed by multiple other sources, including Matt Norlander of CBS Sports.
Love had originally committed to Michigan out of the portal on April 7. He committed to Michigan over other schools that were involved in this portal recruitment such as the Mizzou Tigers, Indiana Hoosiers, and Memphis Tigers.
Expect Indiana and Mizzou to still be involved in this portal recruitment with Love back on the market. Texas is also likely to be involved with a host of other schools that have already kicked the tires on the former UNC volume-scoring guard.
The interesting part about Texas getting involved in this portal recruitment again after Love de-committed from Michigan is how it could clash with the return of Hunter to the Longhorns’ backcourt. Love is a high-usage guard that started in all but a handful of the more than 100 games he played at UNC in the last three seasons.
Could Terry and the Texas staff find a way to integrate Love into a backcourt rotation that already features the likes of Abmas, Hunter, and Weaver? That will be the main question as it pertains to the Longhorns in this portal recruitment.
