There will be a lot of action for Texas basketball and new head coach Rodney Terry in the NCAA Transfer Portal in the next 10 days. A number of Texas’ top portal targets at this point of the offseason are expected to announce in the near future, which could bring the picture of the projected roster for next season more into shape.

After landing four portal commits in the last month or so (and getting one player from the NBA Draft), Terry and the Longhorns are up to eight scholarship spots occupied on the projected roster ahead of the 2023-24 season. Texas got up to eight scholarship spots occupied on the roster for next season when sophomore guard Tyrese Hunter announced over the weekend that he will be returning to school for the 2023-24 campaign.

Hunter withdrew his name from the 2023 NBA Draft after declaring early a couple of months ago.

Here is what the projected roster currently looks like heading into next season after the news of Hunter’s withdrawal from the 2023 NBA Draft.

PG: Max Abmas

SG: Tyrese Hunter

Wing: Chendall Weaver/TBD

PF: Dylan Disu

C: Kadin Shedrick

B6: Brock Cunningham

B7: Ze’Rik Onyema

B8: Alex Anamekwe

Who could round out the 2023 transfer class for Texas basketball?

Texas is still likely looking to bring in another two portal players to fill out the rest of the core part of the rotation ahead of the 2023-24 season. Here’s a look at a prediction of each remaining portal commitment for the Longhorns this offseason.

Caleb Love, G

One of the most high-profile priority portal targets for Terry and the Longhorns at the moment is the former North Carolina Tar Heels junior guard Caleb Love. The 6-foot-4 and 195-pound former five-star recruit surfaced in the portal again after he de-committed from the Michigan Wolverines last week following an admissions issue with the university.

Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas reported on May 21 (paid content) that Texas and the UConn Huskies are two of the top schools that Love is deciding between. And it sounds like he is on the precipice of a decision in the next week or two.

Texas and UConn could both be appealing options for the former Tar Heel. UConn is coming off a National Championship run and could offer Love a starting spot at the two next season. Meanwhile, Texas could offer Love a spot in a potent backcourt, which would likely mean a three-guard starting lineup for the Longhorns heading into next season.

The pitch for UConn is that it offers a high-flying offense under head coach Dan Hurley that Love’s game seemingly fits well in. UConn also obviously has the pitch of being the reigning National Champions.

For Texas, the pitch is that Love could play next to what could be one of the best backcourt duos in the Big 12 in Abmas and Hunter next season.
