Another big-time transfer that the Longhorns are after lately is the former Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Loyola (MD) Greyhounds senior shooting guard/wing Cam Spencer. The 6-foot-4 and 205-pound sharpshooter is one of the biggest names to surface in the portal since the spring window closed for underclassmen to be immediately eligible next season.

Multiple reports have confirmed in the last few days that Texas is interested in the standout two-way wing. Texas was one of a half-dozen schools mentioned in a report from Adam Zagoria and Brian Fonseca of NJ.com that have engaged in meaningful conversations with Spencer since his name surfaced in the portal last weekend. And it sounds like NIL could play a big role in this portal recruitment.

The other five to watch here are the Miami Hurricanes, Kentucky Wildcats, Indiana Hoosiers, Georgetown Hoyas, and UConn.

It’s not surprising to see the caliber of programs that are prioritizing this portal recruitment. Spencer is not only the best sharpshooter in the portal at this point of the offseason, but he is also one of the most well-rounded and proven two-guards. A lot of people might know Spencer for his secondary playmaking ability and shooting efficiency (especially from deep), but he also averaged two steals per game last season for one of the best defensive teams in the Big Ten in Rutgers.

It’s worth noting that if Texas lands a portal commitment from either Spencer, that probably rules out the possibility of also getting Love. It’s not very likely that the Longhorns would be able to win either of these portal recruitments without the pitch of a starting spot involved.

If Texas hypothetically landed a portal commitment from Spencer, that would probably mean the Longhorns have their best shooting team in at least the last two decades. Adding Spencer would give the Longhorns three players on the projected roster for next season that all shot better than 40 percent from deep during the 2022-23 campaign in Division I college hoops.
