Texas Football: 2 former Horns transfers that re-united with Tom Herman

The former Texas football head coach to most recently land another head coaching job around the FBS came when Tom Herman was hired by the Florida Atlantic Owls early this offseason. The former Texas and Houston Cougars head coach Herman was hired by the Owls to replace former FAU head coach Willie Taggart, who was fired after going 5-7 for the second consecutive season in 2022.

This will be Herman’s first head coaching gig since Texas let him go following the conclusion of the 2020 season. Since then, Herman was a special projects coach/analyst under former head coach Matt Nagy with the Chicago Bears in 2021. And in 2022, Herman was a commentator on CBS Sports for college football.

Herman will be looking to help resurrect an FAU program that was down over the last few years after Lane Kiffin left to take the head coaching job with the Ole Miss Rebels in the SEC in 2020. The former Texas head coach has found success before at the Group of Five level when he led Houston to back-to-back seasons with at least nine wins, including an upset win over the Florida State Seminoles in the Peach Bowl during the 2015 season.

To help get him off the ground during his first year as FAU’s head coach, Herman has turned to the NCAA Transfer Portal to rebuild his roster. Herman and the Owls have already hauled in a dozen portal commits this offseason. That’s helped to build a 2023 transfer class for the Owls that ranks second in the Conference-USA (per 247Sports Team Transfer Rankings).
