Texas Football: 2 former Horns transfers that re-united with Tom Herman
Casey Thompson, QB
The biggest portal commit that Herman and the Owls landed so far this offseason came courtesy of the former Texas and Nebraska Cornhuskers redshirt senior quarterback Casey Thompson. The ex-blue-chip recruit put his name in the portal after it looked like he was losing the quarterback competition to the former Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims at Nebraska coming out of spring ball.
Instead of pushing for the starting job in Lincoln under new head coach Matt Rhule this fall, Thompson decided he would re-unite with the head coach that originally recruited him to Texas. Thompson was Herman’s first quarterback commit when he was at Texas. This is a relationship that goes back more than a half-decade.
And given FAU’s need to find a starting quarterback during Herman’s first year at the helm this fall, it makes sense that Thompson would link up again with the head coach that recruited him to the first stop of his collegiate career.
Thompson will enter the fall as the likely favorite to win the starting QB job at FAU. Other quarterbacks that are involved in the competition are Central Michigan transfer Daniel Richardson, Tyriq Starks, and Michael Johnson Jr.
Among the quarterbacks involved in the battle for the starting job in Boca Raton, Thompson clearly has the most proven experience under his belt. He’s also the most familiar with Herman’s system after playing under the former Texas head coach for multiple years (2018-2020).
During his time at Texas and Nebraska, Thompson registered more than 4,800 passing yards, 47 passing touchdowns, 19 interceptions, nearly 200 rushing yards, and 10 rushing scores. Thompson started the bulk of the games for the Longhorns during the 2021 season. He put his name in the portal during the 2022 offseason after Texas landed Quinn Ewers from Ohio State. Thompson wound up entering the portal for the second time in as many years this offseason after starting at Nebraska for the bulk of the 2022 season.
