SEC Football: 3 conference expansion candidates to poach from ACC
Clemson
Another program that Finebaum mentioned in his rant regarding conference expansion on Cole Cubelic and Greg McElroy’s show this week concerned the Clemson Tigers. Finebaum put Clemson and Florida State in the same bucket of ACC schools that aren’t as appealing to the SEC as each thinks they are.
I also disagree with Finebaum’s take on Clemson in terms of its appeal to the SEC in this hypothetical round of the conference expansion conversation.
While I do think that Florida State is a more holistic and potent brand for the SEC to add than Clemson, the immediate impact that the Tigers could have on this conference is more notable. Head coach Dabo Swinney has Clemson in the spot of being a perennial title contender in football year in and year out.
Not only do Swinney and the Tigers have two National Championships in the last eight years, but they also have won the ACC Championship every year but one in that same timeframe.
As a matter of fact, we should be hard-pressed to find a major conference in college sports that wouldn’t want to add Clemson to the mix. Clemson has a strong fan base and a football program that is in a spot to have sustained success under the direction of the Swinney regime well into the future.
