The only post-spring transfer addition for the Longhorns this offseason came courtesy of a commitment from the former Minnesota Golden Gophers senior grad transfer defensive lineman Trill Carter. The sizable 6-foot-2 and 310-pound interior defensive lineman was brought in by the Longhorns to help sure up the depth up front behind the top group of Byron Murphy II and T’Vondre Sweat.

I expect to see Carter in the defensive line rotation with other experienced players at the position this fall such as senior Alfred Collins and redshirt junior Vernon Broughton.

What the addition of Carter does above all else is it ensures that the defensive line will hold up in run defense and with the interior pass rush throughout the season given how much Bo Davis likes to rotate up front. It also helps to ensure the depth will remain strong if injuries do start to pile up this fall.

Carter is a defensive lineman that was a consistent force along the interior in run defense in the last two or three seasons at Minnesota. He also is a big body that can hold his lane assignments well. Where Carter’s game is lacking a bit is in terms of the ability to generate an interior pass rush.

He registered just 2.5 sacks in more than 500 pass rush snaps at Minnesota in the last two seasons.

All in all, I like the addition of Carter along the interior defensive line. Davis and the Longhorns boasted one of the most improved defensive line units not just in the Big 12, but in the entire country last season. And while there is some turnover that this position faced this offseason (losing Keondre Coburn and Moro Ojomo), adding an experienced lineman such as Carter will help the line perform at a high level again in 2023.
