Texas Football: 5 immediate impact summer enrollees for the Horns
Spencer Shannon, TE
The wildcard name on this list among the potential immediate impact summer enrollees for the Longhorns is the toolsy and underrated former three-star Mater Dei tight end recruit Spencer Shannon. The towering 6-foot-7 and 235-pound California native tight end Shannon is the only player at the position arriving this offseason that can help Banks and the Longhorns right away.
Texas did bring in the former three-star Isidore Newman (LA) tight end recruit Will Randle with the 2023 class. But Randle, unfortunately, suffered a season-ending ACL tear last fall, which will keep him from making an early impact for the Longhorns in 2023.
What Shannon brings to the table that the Longhorns dearly need is blocking tight end depth. He might be the most viable option among blocking tight ends for the Longhorns heading into the fall outside of juniors JT Sanders and Gunnar Helm.
Shannon is still a very raw prospect in terms of his ability as a receiving tight end. But in short-yardage situations, I think there is a lot of value he could contribute in live-game action as a blocker.
If Shannon can get in the weight room and add some muscle mass to his frame this summer, he could prove to the coaches that he’s ready to get on the field for some situational live-game reps as a blocker this fall.
Summer workouts and fall camp will be really important for Shannon to show out. He is one of the few three-star recruits in the Longhorns 2023 class that could contribute immediately this fall if he makes the right impression during the summer workout program.
