Texas Baseball: Where the Longhorns are projected for Regionals
May 28 will bring the final day of conference tournament games before Texas baseball figures out its postseason fate for regionals. Texas and head coach David Pierce will make their third-straight NCAA Tournament this year after winning a share of the Big 12 regular season title along with the West Virginia Mountaineers and Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Pierce and the Longhorns head into the postseason with a record of 38-20 (15-9 Big 12) after falling in each of its first two games in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship this week. Texas was knocked out of the Big 12 Tournament after a May 24 loss to the No. 8 Kansas Jayhawks and then a 6-0 loss on May 25 to the No. 5 Kansas State Wildcats.
Where do the Longhorns stand ahead of the 2023 NCAA Baseball Tournament Selection Show on May 29?
Where Texas baseball projects for regionals
Before we get into the outlets projecting Texas’ postseason seed for the NCAA Tournament, let’s take a look at where Pierce’s squad ranks in terms of the latest power rankings and RPI. The latest RPI (through games played at the end of the day on May 27) pegs Texas as the No. 30 team in the country.
And the latest Sonny Moore power rankings (updated on the morning of May 28) slots the Longhorns as the No. 30 team in the country.
It’s pretty clear where some of the more prominent rankings and metrics peg Texas heading into the postseason.
D1Baseball projects Texas as a two-seed in the Stanford Regional
The latest field projections for the NCAA Tournament from D1Baseball have Texas landing in the Stanford Regional (hosted by the No. 7 Stanford Cardinal) as a two-seed. D1Baseball has Texas as the only team outside of California projected in the Stanford Regional, with the other teams being the three-seed UC Irvine and four-seed Santa Clara.
Baseball America projects Texas as a two-seed in the Coral Gables Regional
Last but not least, the latest Field of 64 projections from Baseball America (updated through the morning of May 28) pegs Texas as a two-seed in the Coral Gables Regional. This at least looks to be a little bit more favorable for the Longhorns in terms of the postseason seeding, as the Coral Gables Regional is hosted by the No. 9 Miami Hurricanes, two spots lower than No. 7 Stanford.
The 16 regional host sites are set to be announced on May 28, following the conclusion of all the conference tournament games this weekend. And then, the complete Field of 64 for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on May 29, at 11 a.m. CT.
