Texas Football: 3 summer enrollees impressing right away in workouts
Derek Williams, S
The player that is probably the most highly anticipated summer enrollee for the Longhorns is the former elite five-star recruit out of New Iberia (LA) Westgate and true freshman safety Derek Williams. The 6-foot-2 and 190-pound Louisiana native safety Williams is the highest-rated of the 2023 summer enrollees from the high school ranks for the Longhorns.
It sounds like Williams has already shown a lot of the reasons why he was such a highly touted recruit coming out of high school early on in summer workouts. The aforementioned IT report noted that Williams and the former four-star Texas safety commit out of Red Oak (TX) High School Warren Roberson were two of the summer enrollees that stuck out the most right away this summer.
Williams’ physical gifts and work ethic in the weight room and in summer conditioning have come to the forefront in the last few days.
If Williams continues on this pace, he will be in a position to push the other safeties that were previously on the roster before this summer for a spot on the two-deep during fall camp. Williams definitely has the talent and physical gifts to compete on the field this fall as a true freshman. He just has some catch-up to do given that he wasn’t one of the spring enrollees for the Longhorns.
Despite enrolling in the summer, there are many Texas fans that still anticipate Williams to be an impact player on the field during the 2023 season. Williams will need to continue to make a big impression on the coaches and more to catch up to the competition that pulled ahead of him on the depth chart during the spring.
