Head coach Steve Sarkisian and quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee got the 2025 Texas football recruiting class off the ground last weekend. Texas landed a commitment from the highly touted four-star Saraland (AL) quarterback KJ Lacey, who was the first to pledge to the 2025 class for Sark and his staff.

Sark and the Longhorns landed Lacey’s commitment over other schools that had offered and he had visited such as the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, Ole Miss Rebels, Tennessee Volunteers, and a few other P5 programs.

Lacey’s commitment not only came as a bit of a surprise last weekend in the midst of Texas’ Elite Camp, but it also is something that can give the Longhorns a lot of momentum on the recruiting trail for the rest of the summer. The commitment of Lacey should help with out-of-state recruiting for Texas and the recruitment of other top skill recruits in the 2024 and 2025 classes.

Last but not least, the commitment of Lacey continues to prove the chops that Sark and Milwee have recruiting the quarterback position. Sark has now landed multiple elite quarterback commits from the high school ranks and via the NCAA Transfer Portal in the last couple of years.

  • Quinn Ewers (Ohio State transfer)
  • Maalik Murphy
  • Arch Manning
  • Trey Owens (2024 4-Star commit)

Lacey seems to think very highly of Sark’s ability to scheme up offenses. That was one of the big reasons why Lacey committed to Texas in the first place.

New Texas football QB commit KJ Lacey calls Steve Sarkisian an “offensive mastermind”

He spoke more about what he thinks about Sark in a recent interview with Bobby Burton and Gerry Hamilton of On Texas Football on June 6.

"“It was the love that Coach Sark and Coach Milwee were showing me, that was like one of the main things.”"

Lacey also discussed how he regards Sark as something of an “offensive mastermind”.

"“Coach Sark being like the offensive mastermind that he is, that also played a really big part in getting me to lean that way.”"

Sark is Texas’ offensive play caller and has produced multiple talented quarterbacks at past stops as a college coach and offensive coordinator. Top quarterback talents such as Alabama’s Mac Jones, USC’s Cody Kessler, Washington’s Jake Locker, and USC’s Matt Leinart all were coached up by Sark at previous stops as a college coach/coordinator.

Lacey will eventually be joining a loaded Texas quarterback room in 2025 that should also feature the likes of Arch, Owens, and potentially even Murphy. Texas is stocking the cupboard full of blue-chip quarterback talent well into the future.
