Texas Football: 3 ‘most improved’ true freshmen so far this offseason
Malik Muhammad, CB
Another true freshman that made a lot of noise during the spring for the Longhorns, just on the defensive side of the ball instead of offense, is the talented cornerback Malik Muhammad. The former blue-chip recruit out of South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas made rapid progress during spring ball after having some freshman moments early in practice.
Muhammad started to figure out his role in the defense along with how to better use his technique and physical gifts to play his style of one-on-one coverage that best suits his skill set. The type of adjustments that small tweaks that Muhammad made during the spring to improve his game showed a level of maturity and a mindset well ahead of his age and experience.
The aforementioned report from Orangebloods specifically mentioned Muhammad as the true freshman from the 2023 class that has shown the “most improvement” so far this offseason. Muhammad is still making the necessary strides he needs to stay in the competition to win live-game reps at the field corner position this fall.
Muhammad is competing with more experienced corners such as sophomore Terrance Brooks and redshirt junior Gavin Holmes to win the starting job at the field spot.
Horns247 reported on June 8 (paid content) that Muhammad is still making a strong case to get on the two-deep at the field corner spot. And if he’s able to solidify his spot potentially as a backup at field corner, he would be well within striking distance of making a move on the starting job in the next year or so.
