What most Texas fans (myself included) would consider to be the most impactful portal addition of the offseason for Terry and the Longhorns is the former Oral Roberts star senior guard Max Abmas. The fifth-year grad transfer and two-time Summit League Player of the Year will be starting at the point guard position for Texas during his final year of eligibility next season.

Abmas will be the floor general that can help Texas return to the heights it reached in the postseason and in the Big 12 Tournament last season, while potentially being able to get them over the hump into the Final Four in 2024.

Texas’ starting backcourt now looks very formidable with Abmas and Hunter projected to get the nod at the one and the two, respectively, heading into next season. Abmas essentially does everything at an elite level at the one on the offensive end, while Hunter can be a lethal off-ball scorer and secondary ball-handler.

Moreover, it sounds like Abmas is already settling in quite nicely on the Forty Acres early in summer workouts. Abmas is reportedly looking like he is “on his way to exceeding the initial expectations inside the Moody Center practice facility”. He’s already blown the coaches away with his ability as a raw bucket-getter and to create open looks for his teammates on offense.

Abmas could be the piece on this roster that ultimately decides whether Texas makes that pivotal deep run in March or April. Texas has the starting backcourt duo between Abmas and Hunter that is necessary to make a deep postseason run. It will now be up to them and the coaching staff to be able to make the necessary adjustments to make sure these two pair well together in the starting backcourt heading into next season.
