A position group that came into focus for Texas football during the spring was the offensive line. Offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood was looking to solidify a top group of eight guys that he and head coach Steve Sarkisian could count on in the trenches heading into the fall.

Yet, that group of eight offensive linemen that Flood and the Longhorns could take into the fall still sounds like it is being evaluated early in summer workouts.

One of the offensive linemen for Flood and the Longhorns that is standing out during the spring and early in summer workouts, though, is sophomore offensive tackle, Cam Williams. The towering 6-foot-5 and 360-pound second-year offensive tackle out of Duncanville High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex has made some of the necessary strides since the start of spring ball to prove that he belongs on the two-deep at offensive tackle or even along the interior this fall.

Williams was one of the second-team offensive tackles to watch early in spring practice. And upon the injury to sophomore offensive guard DJ Campbell that kept him out of the Orange-White Game, Williams wound up getting first-team snaps along the interior offensive line on April 15.

Texas football OL Cam Williams reportedly “continues to impress” this summer

It sounds like Williams continues to impress those within the program early in summer workouts too. Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods reported on June 11 (subscriber content) that Williams “continues to impress everyone inside the building” early in the summer workout program.

Another significant nugget from this report from Orangebloods states that Williams has “emerged as a player who will receive playing time this season”. The staff reportedly likes him as a candidate to lock down a spot on the two-deep potentially along the interior offensive line in fall camp.

If he keeps progressing throughout the rest of the offseason the way he has since the start of spring camp, Williams could push for starting reps at one of the offensive guard spots this fall. He already did enough to get first-team reps at offensive guard late in spring ball in the wake of the injury to Campbell.

It’s definitely not out of the question that Williams will be one of the fast risers up the depth chart that could steal away first-team practice reps this fall at a few different spots along the O-Line.

Flood and the Longhorns still look to be keeping the three starting spots along the interior offensive line open for competition ahead of fall camp. While Texas does return each of its starters along the interior offensive line from last season, it’s clear that Flood and this staff will put out the best group of five to compete (regardless of what the depth chart looked like last year) in the trenches this fall.
