Texas Football: 4 recruits that impressed at Horns Mega Camp
Jacob Ponton, OL
The most hotly-discussed recruit that was on campus for the Mega Camp over the weekend was the three-star 2024 Dripping Springs (TX) offensive tackle and Texas Tech commit Jacob Ponton. The recent Texas Tech pledge was the camper that generated the most buzz, thus why he was seen riding on the infamous golf cart around campus when he was leaving the bubble on June 11.
Ponton is a potent offensive tackle recruit that could be a fast riser up Texas’ big board at the position among in-state targets in the 2024 class during the summer and the fall. If he continues to improve his blocking ability and physical tools in the next four or six months the way he has in the prior year, Ponton will be a recruit to watch for the Longhorns in the 2024 class.
And while the 6-foot-6 and 270-pound offensive tackle recruit out of Dripping Springs High School didn’t receive a Texas offer coming out of the Mega Camp, he is certainly on the radar for Flood and the Longhorns heading into the summer.
Reginald Vaughn, DL
Among the higher-rated 2025 defensive recruits that camped at Texas over the weekend, the touted four-star Madison (MS) Hartfield Academy defensive lineman Reginald Vaughn was one of the standouts of note.
The 6-foot-2 and 257-pound Mississippi native Vaughn is the only prospect on this list that attended the Mega Camp for the Longhorns last weekend that already held a Texas offer. Texas and defensive line coach Bo Davis did a tremendous early evaluation here, as they were the first Power Five school to offer Vaughn back in January 2023.
Since that time, Vaughn’s recruitment has started to blow up as he’s getting more attention from SEC schools in early June. After camping at both schools this offseason, Vaughn has received offers from the likes of the Ole Miss Rebels and Auburn Tigers as well as the LSU Tigers and Mississippi State Bulldogs.
All four of those SEC offers came Vaughn’s way in the last week.
Vaughn continued to impress the coaches with his athletic upside and agility during the Mega Camp. We heard his name come up a couple of times among the 2025 defensive recruits that looked the best during the camp evals.
If Vaughn keeps adding muscle mass while flashing athletically the way he did on film and in camp/combine settings this year during his junior season at Hartfield Academy, his recruitment will continue to explode nationally. And it appears that Texas getting its foot in the door early in this one will be a key factor moving forward in this recruitment.
