Who is playing in the 2023 Chick-Fil-A kickoff classic?

The 2023 Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic will take place for the 16th consecutive season this fall during Labor Day Weekend. The Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic started during the 2008 season when the No. 24 Alabama Crimson Tide and head coach Nick Saban downed the No. 9 Clemson Tigers and then head coach Tommy Bowden in Week 1 on Aug. 30 by the final score of 34-10.

Over the course of the next decade and a half, the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic gave college football fans a plethora of memorable games during Labor Day Weekend. That includes the No. 21 LSU Tigers holding off a spirited No. 18 North Carolina Tar Heels team in 2010 and the No. 25 Tennessee Volunteers fending off an upset bid from the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in double overtime in 2017.

Last season, the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic featured the defending back-to-back National Champion Georgia Bulldogs dominating the Oregon Ducks 49-3. And then, in the second game of the kickoff classic last year, No. 4 Clemson handily defeated Georgia Tech by a score of 41-10 two days after Georgia’s domination of the Ducks on Sep. 3.

So, who is playing in the 2023 Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic and when will it take place this fall?

2023 Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic pits Louisville vs. Georgia Tech

For the second consecutive season, Georgia Tech will take part in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. The Yellow Jackets will face its ACC foe Louisville Cardinals on Sep. 1, 2023.

Georgia Tech and Louisville have both played in two kickoff classics. But both programs will be looking for their first win in this kickoff event this fall. Louisville last played in the kickoff classic when it fell short of the Ole Miss Rebels by double digits in 2021.

One of these two teams will join eight other FBS programs among those that have at least one win in the kickoff classic.

Alabama has the most wins in the kickoff classic, boasting an impressive 7-0 record going back to its convincing win over Clemson to start the 2008 season. Ole Miss and Tennessee are the only other two schools that are undefeated in multiple kickoff classic games.

The Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic is currently scheduled to have four more games through the start of the 2025 college football season. The future scheduled kickoff classic games in the next few seasons will be highlighted by Clemson battling Georgia in Week 1 of the 2024 season on Aug. 31.
