Texas Football: What do the Longhorns do IF Quinn Ewers gets hurt?
By Robbie Price
What if Ewers is out for an extended time?
This is where things get interesting to me. If Sark has time to prepare a gameplan knowing Ewers is out, who does he make it for?
I’ll start by saying that, most likely, Murphy steps in and takes over with little changes to the overall direction of the offense. He likely would do fairly well but would experience the growing pains of a young QB, though that would be the case regardless of who the replacement is.
But I think there is a universe where Arch gets the nod in this scenario.
Hear me out here. His advantage over other quarterbacks, the reason he was the No. 1 overall recruit, and is an almost slam dunk first-round pick is his advanced knowledge of the game. His family has prepared him for the mental side of football better than 99 percent of quarterbacks his age. He already entered college impressing with his understanding of the offense and ability to read defenses, and this summer is another opportunity for him to continue to grow.
Consider that this area that is the best part of Arch’s game also happens to be where Murphy struggles the most. Is it so crazy to think that Sark would sacrifice the ceiling of the offense that Murphy could provide for the consistency of a Manning-led offense?
A gameplan curated for Arch revolving around RPOs would allow him to read the defense and put the ball where it needs to be. This would not demand constant downfield attacks, and the throws would not be difficult. If Sark gets to the point where he feels Arch can execute this at a high level this fall, which is certainly possible, he could see it as a safer approach to winning games.
Again, this would entail Arch drastically growing in his feel for the game to surpass Murphy. I do not think that is likely, especially after Murphy’s spring game performance.
But it is fun to think about.
Who do YOU think will play in these scenarios? What other hypotheticals should I dive into this summer? Let me know your thoughts in the comments and on Twitter @hookemheadlines and @robbiepricejr.
