Word has started to come in this summer as to what the new enrollees for the Texas football program are looking like in the early phases of the summer strength and conditioning program. Texas welcomed more than a dozen new additions to campus for the summer semester, including two NCAA Transfer Portal commits.

The two portal commits that head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns staff welcomed to campus this summer are the former Minnesota Golden Gophers senior defensive lineman Trill Carter and Stanford Cardinal senior punter Ryan Sanborn.

The most recent transfer commit was the former of those two portal pickups for the Longhorns. Carter will be an immediate impact player in the defensive line rotation for DL coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns this fall. He was brought in to shore up the depth and proven experience along the defensive line.

And it sounds like Carter is off to an excellent start for the Longhorns in the summer workout program. He is making a solid impression on people in and around the program since he arrived on campus a couple of weeks ago.

Horns247 reported on June 15 (paid content) that Carter is going to be a “great” and “important addition” to the defensive line room for the Longhorns this fall. A team source mentioned in this report also stated that Carter “can move” and that he uses his hands really well.

Carter isn’t wasting any time getting down to work in the weight room this summer.

And it’s worth noting that Carter isn’t the only experienced defensive lineman setting the tone for Davis and the Longhorns in the workout program this summer. Senior defensive lineman T’Vondre Sweat and junior Byron Murphy II are also reportedly pushing some of the younger guys at the position as hard as ever early in summer workouts.

After Texas lost key senior defensive linemen such as Keondre Coburn and Moro Ojomo this offseason, it doesn’t sound like the upperclassmen at the position are missing a beat. It sounds more like Ojomo and Coburn effectively passed the torch to the likes of Sweat and Murphy to lead a deep and talented group of defensive linemen this year.

Carter should also be an integral and reliable part of this defensive line rotation this fall that can help mentor some of the younger players at the position, such as Sydir Mitchell and Aaron Bryant.

Carter is bringing a nice combination of potentially even better-than-advertised physical tools and a proven track record of live-game experience to Texas. He’s got over 1,100 career defensive snaps under his belt throughout his four seasons at Minnesota.
