Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian began summer workouts a couple of weeks ago, signaling one of the final phases of the offseason before fall camp finally gets underway. While it seems like just a few weeks ago that spring ball concluded (at least it does to me), the reality is that fall camp is about to begin in no time.

There are still some essential notes and nuggets to discuss in the early stages of the summer workout program before we look ahead to fall camp. One of those storylines involves the growth and development of redshirt sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Texas’ second-year starting quarterback, Ewers, has built a lot of hype with his growth and improved maturity and composure behind the scenes and on the practice field so far this offseason. From the start of the offseason, during the winter strength and conditioning program, we heard about Ewers taking on more prominent leadership roles in the locker room.

Ewers was one of the team leaders during winter workouts, which was a first for him so far during his collegiate career. He also entered spring ball as the unquestioned (despite what some in the national media might have led you to think) starting quarterback for the first time in his career.

There were many reasons why Ewers displayed more confidence in the locker room, in workouts, and on the practice field so far this offseason. And it sounds like the improved leadership traits are being displayed for Ewers early in summer workouts.

Eric Nahlin of Inside Texas reported on June 16 (paid content) that Ewers is the “lead worker” among the offensive players early in the summer workout program. Ewers is reportedly looking “more assertive” and “confident” as a leader in the QB room and for the entire offense this summer.

Ewers looks to be making the necessary strides to become a more composed and consistent force to lead this offense heading into the 2023 season. But it’s one thing to show these improvements on the practice field and in the weight room. He needs to show he can get the job done when the lights are brightest in live-game action on the field this season.

For now, though, Ewers appears to be making a lot of the right moves on and off the field. And for what it’s worth, some recent pictures that emerged of Ewers in summer workouts show that he’s looking a lot bigger and stronger than he was at this time last offseason.
