Texas football has ‘chance to shut the door’ with 5-Star CB Kobe Black
What could be the biggest official visit weekend of the year for Texas football begins June 23. Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian will host around 20 big-time official visitors among recruits from the 2024 class this weekend.
This will be the second consecutive weekend where Sark and the Longhorns staff host at least 20 official visitors on campus. And one of the biggest names that will be officially visiting Texas, among the prospects making it to campus on either of the big visit weekends, is the elite five-star Waco (TX) Connally cornerback Kobe Black.
Black will be making his second trip to Austin of the offseason, and the first since he made an unofficial visit for the first Junior Day of the offseason on Jan. 21. This will also be the third of six official visits that Black currently has scheduled for the summer and fall.
Texas football looking to “shut the door” with 5-Star CB target Kobe Black this weekend
He already made officials to see the Oklahoma Sooners (June 9) and Ohio State Buckeyes (June 16) this month.
Texas being the next official visit and the last of the summer trips he has on the docket, is fitting considering where the Longhorns stand in this recruitment. Texas has set the pace in this recruitment since the spring.
Texas CB coach Terry Joseph’s relationship with Black along with the selling point of early playing time at boundary corner has established Texas as the school with the most buzz in this recruitment in the last few months. Black likes the idea of being able to start right away at boundary corner with the potential early departure to the NFL Draft of redshirt junior Ryan Watts next offseason.
It sounds like Texas has a shot at converting on its momentum in the race to land a commitment from Black this summer during the official visit this weekend. Joseph and the Longhorns will probably take a crack at shutting down this recruitment.
Hudson Standish of Horns247 reported on June 20 (paid content) that Texas “has a serious chance to shut the door in this recruitment” when Black makes the official trip to Austin from June 23-25.
Standish mentioned in this report that Texas will attempt to make a move similar to what it did in the recruitment of five-star New Iberia (LA) Westgate safety Derek Williams when he committed to the Longhorns last summer.
If Texas can snag a commitment from Black this weekend, that would immediately put the Longhorns among the best 2024 cornerback classes in the nation. Texas set the pace last weekend by landing a commitment from the touted four-star Scottsdale (AZ) Desert Mountain cornerback Santana Wilson during his official visit on June 17.
Texas has another round of important blue-chip cornerback recruits visiting campus this weekend. Joseph and the Longhorns are set to host Black along with the high-four-star Temple (TX) Lake Belton product Selman Bridges and four-star Marrero (LA) John Ehret product Wardell Mack among the top cornerback recruits officially visiting from June 23-25.
Most would consider Black to be the most important of the priority cornerback recruits officially visiting Texas in a few days, though.
Texas currently has a commitment from one pure cornerback recruit in the 2024 class in the aforementioned Arizona native Wilson. There is also a four-star athlete commit in Hunter Moddon that could play defensive back for the Longhorns. But there is some uncertainty surrounding the status of Moddon’s commitment to the Longhorns in the 2024 class this summer.
