For the second consecutive cycle, Texas football and Coach Steve Sarkisian were able to go into the state of Florida and land their No. 1 running back target. Jerrick Gibson of IMG Academy announced his commitment to the Longhorns on Saturday amidst a massive recruiting weekend on the Forty Acres.

Gibson is currently rated as a high four-star prospect and the No. 2 back in the country. Listed at 5-10, 200-pounds, Gibson combines a unique amount of explosion and speed that allows him to run over and around defenders. He is elite in tight spaces and has an uncanny ability to put his foot in the ground and explode to the second level. Gibson has the hands of a wide receiver and is seen as a three-down back at the collegiate level.

Major props must be given to running backs coach Tashard Choice, who has once again proven his recruiting prowess during his short time in Austin. Grabbing CJ Baxter and Gibson from the talent-rich state of Florida shows Choice can recruit against the top programs in the country.

Gibson pairs with 4-star back Christian Clark, who committed to the Longhorns on June 22. Texas now has the running back duo it coveted in the class of 2024, as one of the strongest positions on the roster does not look to be falling off anytime soon. The 2024 running back room in Austin could very well include Jonathon Brooks, Jaydon Blue, Baxter, Clark, and Gibson.

As for the rest of the weekend, do not be surprised if Gibson’s commitment sets off a domino effect around this weekend’s blue-chip visitors. With over 20 recruits with offers currently on campus, it is not if the next domino falls; it’s who and when?
