9. A.J. “Jam” Jones (1978-1981)

Career stats: 2,874 rushing yards (4.5 YPC), 27 rushing TDs

An ultra-consistent and explosive running back that is often overlooked in Texas program history during the late 1970s and early 1980s is A.J. “Jam” Jones.

Jones is often overlooked among program history’s most productive and well-rounded running backs because his time at Texas came during and after the legendary Earl Campbell. Despite that, Jones put together three seasons with more than 800 yards from scrimmage. He also registered at least three scores in his four seasons at Texas.

Not many running backs in program history were as consistent as Jones throughout his collegiate career. He averaged more than four yards per carry while registering at least six rushing touchdowns in his last three seasons at Texas.

Jones capped his career at Texas on a high note in the 1981 season, helping the Longhorns pull off the upset of the No. 3 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in the Cotton Bowl by a narrow score of 14-12. Texas finished the 1981 season with just one loss, earning it a No. 2 spot in the final AP Poll.
