Texas football: Top 10 all-time rushing leaders in Longhorns history
8. Roosevelt Leaks (1972-1974)
Career stats: 2,923 rushing yards (5.3 YPC), 26 rushing TDs
Roosevelt Leaks is a powerful and gritty back that led the way for the Longhorns’ ground game in the early-to-mid 1970s. A two-time 1,000-yard rusher for the Longhorns, Leaks was one of the best running backs in college football in 1972 and 1973.
The insanely productive start to Leaks’ collegiate career at Texas earned him a third-place finish in the Heisman voting in 1973.
After registering over 2,500 rushing yards and 22 rushing scores in his first two seasons at Texas, Leaks looked primed for a huge campaign in 1974. Unfortunately, Leaks suffered a serious injury in spring 1974, leading to him playing through ailments for most of the season.
He put up just over 400 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns during the 1974 season.
