6. Chris Gilbert (1966-1968)

Career stats: 3,231 rushing yards (5.4 YPC), 28 rushing TDs

Going in chronological order, the first player on this list would be the three-time 1,000-yard rusher and Longhorn legend Chris Gilbert. No one did it better leading the run-heavy Texas offenses in the 1960s under legendary head coach Darrell Royal than Gilbert.

Gilbert rushed for over 1,000 yards and a total of 28 rushing touchdowns during his three seasons as Texas’ starting running back. His efforts culminated in a career year in 1998, when he finished eighth in the Heisman voting after posting more than 1,100 rushing yards and double-digit rushing touchdowns for the first time in his collegiate career.

To this day, Gilbert is still one of just a few players in program history to register at least 1,000 rushing yards in each season of his collegiate career.
