Texas football lands multiple RPM picks for 5-Star Colin Simmons
The biggest official visit of the offseason for the 2024 Texas football recruiting class kicked off on June 23. Texas is hosting roughly 20 official visitors among key targets from the 2024 recruiting class this weekend, including highlighting prospects such as five-star Duncanville edge rusher Colin Simmons and five-star Waco (TX) Connally cornerback Kobe Black.
Simmons is the biggest official visitor on campus this weekend, though, by a good margin. He is not only the top-ranked recruit out of the state of Texas in the 2024 class, but also the nation’s top-ranked edge rusher recruit in a cycle that the Longhorns desperately need an impact player.
Heading into Simmons’ official visit this weekend, many pundits in the recruiting industry felt that Texas and the LSU Tigers were his top two schools. There also didn’t appear to be a clear leader between Texas and LSU as of early this summer.
However, a couple of pundits at Inside Texas/On3 this weekend feel Simmons could have a new leader in his recruitment.
Texas football receives multiple On3 RPM picks for 5-Star EDGE Colin Simmons
Gerry Hamilton and Eric Nahlin from Inside Texas placed On3 RPM picks on the morning of June 24, projecting Simmons’ commitment to the Longhorns with moderate to high confidence levels. Hamilton’s RPM pick came with 6.5 out of 10 confidence, and Nahlin was 6 out of 10.
Texas has positively impacted Simmons during his last two visits to the Forty Acres since last fall. He made an unofficial visit last fall during the TCU game on Nov. 12. Texas also hosted him for a successful unofficial trip on the second Junior Day of the offseason on March 25.
And if the confidence from Hamilton and Nahlin at IT says anything about how Simmons’ Texas official visit is going so far this weekend, it appears the Longhorns are moving the needle for him.
Moreover, these On3 RPM picks for Simmons come after multiple national recruiting analysts/reporters predicted LSU as the likely destination for the elite edge prospect out of Duncanville within the last year or so. Multiple Rivals FutureCasts were placed in the first few months of the year, all projecting Simmons’ commitment to LSU.
Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports also put in a Crystal Ball Prediction projecting Simmons’ commitment to the Tigers in July 2022.
Among Simmons’ top two schools, Texas gets the first official visit with the elite South Dallas edge rusher this weekend. Simmons arrived for his Texas official visit on June 23 (which will wrap up on June 25).
Simmons is the top priority for the Longhorns in the 2024 class. Texas has all hands on deck for this recruitment, which even includes Sark as one of the primary recruiters for Simmons. The Longhorns also have co-DCs Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate involved in this recruitment, along with special teams coordinator/TE coach Jeff Banks.
We will continue to follow this recruitment keenly as more updates come out this weekend for Simmons’ official visit to Austin.
Texas is the fourth school that Simmons has officially visited. He already made officials to Miami (June 9), SMU (June 13), and Alabama (June 16) this summer. Simmons also has his LSU official visit set for Nov. 11.
