Texas football was patient with the 2024 Texas football recruiting class to start the offseason. Head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff didn’t aggressively pursue commitments in the 2024 recruiting class in the last eight or 12 months. That is changing this summer.

Sark and the Longhorns staff have started reeling in the blue-chip commits in the 2024 class, and more are coming soon. No blue-chip commit would be bigger in the 2024 class for the Longhorns than the elite five-star Duncanville edge rusher priority Colin Simmons.

The top-ranked edge rusher recruit in the nation in the 2024 class and the No. 1 prospect out of Texas, Simmons, looks to be trending to the Longhorns in late June. And it sounds like a commitment from Simmons is possible later this summer for Texas.

Texas football in pole position entering July with 5-Star EDGE Colin Simmons

In the last few days, a half-dozen national recruiting analysts/reporters from the major recruiting services have forecasted Simmons’ commitment to Texas.

The writing is on the wall that Texas has emerged as the clear favorite in the race to land a commitment from Simmons this summer over the LSU Tigers, Miami Hurricanes, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Georgia Bulldogs, among other schools.

The cause of the dramatic shift in the pecking order of the top schools in Simmons’ recruitment lately comes down to a couple of key factors. First, Texas made a big impression on Simmons and his family during a very successful official visit last weekend.

Another significant factor in this recruitment is how far LSU has fallen behind. LSU has lost ground to Texas and Miami in this recruitment since Simmons had successful officials to both schools in the last few weeks.

Inside Texas reported on June 26 (paid content) that Texas has “ascended” with Simmons while LSU is “doing the opposite” in recent weeks.

We’ll now have to wait and see if Simmons takes any visits in late July, once the dead period is over, to gauge what his recruitment and decision timeline will look like heading into the fall. Texas will push Simmons to shut down his recruitment in the next month or so.

But there’s no guarantee that Simmons won’t take his time to make his final decision.

Simmons is a top in-state priority for the Longhorns in the 2024 class this summer. He was the most important official visit during a loaded weekend on the recruiting trail for the Longhorns from June 23-25.
