Texas football is roughly one month from the start of fall camp. Before we know it, Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian will be back at it, preparing for the upcoming college football season.

Sark and the Longhorns have made some progress during summer workouts to get some of the younger players and new additions to the program this offseason ready for what’s to come on the field this fall.

One aspect of the offseason often overlooked when it comes to getting in the weight room and some simulated practice-type reps is the summer workout program and the 7v7 work. The summer is an important time for players to get down to work in 7v7 practice, the film room, and the weight room.

We’ve heard about some positive strides that Longhorns players have made this summer, especially since the start of 7v7 work in the last few weeks. Upperclassmen and underclassmen rank among the standouts in 7v7 work this summer.

Standouts from 7v7 this summer for Texas football

Here’s a look at three Longhorns players that have impressed in 7v7 work in summer workouts.

Billy Walton, EDGE

A pleasant surprise among the true freshman summer enrollees is the former underrated three-star recruit out of South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, edge rusher Billy Walton. The 6-foot-3 and 215-pound Walton caught the attention of the coaching staff and his teammates immediately this summer.

We’ve often heard that Walton’s physical traits, more specifically his speed and quickness, stood out immediately since he arrived on campus for the summer semester. It sounds like his quick feet, agility, and football IQ have stuck out in 7v7 work and in the summer strength and conditioning program.

Eric Nahlin of Inside Texas reported (paid content) that Walton is showing “good pass rushing traits” and “good feet” so far this summer.

Walton is reportedly looking like someone that is bound to make a big impact on this defensive front as a quality pass rusher in a couple of years. He needs to add weight to his frame, but Walton has the traits to be something special later in his career at Texas.
