Texas Football: 3 Longhorns players shining in 7v7 this summer
Malik Muhammad, CB
Among the most improved true freshmen so far this offseason for the Longhorns is the former elite blue-chip recruit out of South Oak Cliff High School, cornerback Malik Muhammad. One of the highest-rated cornerback recruits in the last decade and a half for the Longhorns, Muhammad has quickly adjusted to the pace of the game at the collegiate level (at least as much as you can in 7v7 and team drills in practice).
Since the first couple of weeks of spring practice, Muhammad has started to make more noise in the cornerback room. In the last two or three weeks of spring ball, and from what we’re hearing about his performances in 7v7 work this summer, Muhammad is learning how to use his length and physicality more effectively in coverage.
IT reported this week that Muhammad is showing a better understanding of the playbook and better technique in pass coverage this summer. He also “continues to impress” with his overall athleticism in summer workouts.
Muhammad has continued to make a strong case to push for early playing time and a spot on the two-deep at field corner this fall. If he continues to prove to CB coach Terry Joseph and Pete Kwiatkowski that his understanding of the schemes while advancing his technique, Muhammad will be too good to keep off the field this fall.
Muhammad has stood out in a big way this offseason, which isn’t an easy thing to do given all the depth and talent in the Texas cornerback room. Texas has more proven corners at the collegiate level than Muhammad, such as sophomore Terrance Brooks, redshirt junior Ryan Watts, and redshirt junior Gavin Holmes. But we’ve heard more positive feedback regarding Muhammad’s progression this summer than any other corner in this room.
