Texas football ‘considered the favorite’ for priority 4-Star CB Wardell Mack
An abundance of commitment dates to watch for key targets of the 2024 Texas football recruiting class for the rest of July will highlight a few high blue-chips. Priority Texas recruits in the 2024 class, such as the highly touted four-star Lancaster (TX) defensive back Corian Gipson and four-star Orlando (FL) Jones defensive lineman D’antre Robinson, are two of the biggest commitments to watch in the next couple of weeks.
There could also be decisions coming soon from other top priority defensive recruits in the 2024 class for the Longhorns this summer, such as high-four-star Marrero (LA) John Ehret cornerback Wardell Mack and elite five-star Duncanville edge rusher Colin Simmons, even though they don’t currently have set commitment dates.
Simmons and Mack both had successful official visits to Austin last month, specifically from June 23-25.
Texas football the favorite for 4-Star CB priority Wardell Mack?
The latter of those two priority defensive recruits for the Longhorns in the 2024 class, Mack, has started trending to Texas in the last few weeks since his official visit to Austin. Three 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions entered in the last couple of weeks unanimously project Mack’s commitment to Texas.
Texas also made the top four schools for Mack, which he announced on social media on July 10, including the Florida State Seminoles, LSU Tigers, and Florida Gators.

It sounds like Mack is approaching a decision after dropping his top four on social media early this week. Inside Texas reported on July 11 (paid content) that Mack could decide within the next month, and the Longhorns are “considered the favorites” in the race to land his commitment this summer.
Mack ranks among Texas’ top DB priorities in the 2024 class this summer
The elite Louisiana native cornerback Mack is the top out-of-state defensive back priority in the Longhorns 2024 class this summer after Texas reeled in a commitment from four-star IMG Academy safety Jordon Johnson-Rubell on July 1.
Mack is one of the top defensive back targets to watch, along with five-star Waco (TX) Connally cornerback Kobe Black and Gipson, in a loaded 2024 class for the Longhorns. Gipson announces on July 22, and Black’s recruitment could go another few months at least. Texas is in a great spot in all three of these recruitments.
Texas has already landed commitments from defensive backs in the 2024 class in Johnson-Rubell and four-star Scottsdale (AZ) Desert Mountain cornerback Santana Wilson. Four-star Daingerfield (TX) athlete commit Aeryn Hampton could also play defensive back, depending on how numbers shake out at wide receiver and DB in the Longhorns 2024 class.
