Texas football vs. ACC

NC State (0-1-0)

The most recent meeting between Texas and any ACC teams on this list that the Longhorns have never defeated on the gridiron occurred during the 1999 season. Texas fell agonizingly short of the NC State Wolfpack in the 1999 regular season opener at home on Aug. 28 by a score of 23-20.

A controversial ball spot on a fourth-down play within the final two minutes of the fourth quarter wound up going NC State’s way, sealing Texas’ fate in the 1999 opener.

Virginia Tech (0-1-0)

The 1990s weren’t favorable to the Longhorns against the current ACC. The Virginia Tech Hokies got the best of the Longhorns in a key showdown between the two squads in the 1995 Sugar Bowl.

No. 13 Virginia Tech was in the Big East then, and No. 8 Texas was in the Southwest Conference. Virginia Tech and Texas won their respective conferences that season. But Virginia Tech wound up notching a convincing win over Texas in the 1995 Sugar Bowl, 28-10.

Syracuse (0-2-1)

Unlike Virginia Tech and NC State, Texas has faced the Syracuse Orange multiple times in the program’s history. The most recent matchup between Texas and Syracuse was in the back end of a home-and-home series in 1993. Texas tied Syracuse at DKR in Week 2 of the 1993 season.

And the last time Texas fell short of the Orange was in the non-conference schedule in 1992. Texas faced No. 9 Syracuse in Week 2. And this was a stacked Syracuse team, led by electric wide receiver/kick returner Qadry Ismail, menacing linebacker Kevin Mitchell, and sure-handed tight end Chris Gedney.

Texas fell short of Syracuse in a hard-fought battle in 1992 at the Carrier Dome by a score of 31-21.

The first matchup between Texas and Syracuse occurred in 1960 in the Cotton Bowl. On the first day of the new decade (Jan. 1, 1960), No. 1 Syracuse duked it out with No. 4 Texas, looking for the program’s first and only national title.

A nine-point win for the Orange over the Longhorns in the 1960 Cotton Bowl netted Syracuse its only national title in program history.
